Westfield Health carried out a study in 2021 and they found that absenteeism cost UK businesses £14 billion in 2020.

This shows that the cost of absenteeism rose by £1.3 billion from the 2019 figures.

In current times, it’s no surprise that the highest reported reasons are due to stress and mental health concerns. As a business owner you need to be on top of this and support your team to keep them, and your business, healthy.

Staff calling in sick can cause you a big headache.  

It comes as no surprise that the leading causes of absenteeism at the moment is due to stress and mental health issues.

And while you can’t stop employees getting ill, there are a number of ways you can reduce absenteeism at work by improving your team’s happiness.

Here are 3 ways to do this:

One. Communicate more.

Make sure you’re having regular 121 meetings with your staff to provide them with a safe space to voice any issues.

Two. Get some training.

Give the managers in your business the right training to identify and deal with mental health issues in the right way.  

Three. Consider a wellbeing programme.

You could give employees access to wellbeing apps, such as Headspace, and look at ways to encourage good physical health.
